What is the Esri/Google relationship?

Google and Esri are working closely together to provide replacement software and training to all of Google's enterprise customers and partners that have implemented Google Earth Enterprise and Google Maps Engine technology. Esri will be providing the new 10.3 version of ArcGIS for Server and related client/app technology to all Google Earth Enterprise and Google Maps Engine customers and partners.

What is Google Maps for Work’s focus?

Google will continue to provide the world’s leading mapping and location based APIs, services and content for developers of both consumer and enterprise applications. The relationship with Esri represents a way to support Earth Enterprise and Maps Engine customers as they become end of support products.

Will there be a cost to transition to Esri software?

No. ArcGIS will be made immediately available to all Google users – at no cost – as a replacement for Google Earth Enterprise and Google Maps Engine. The first year of maintenance and/or subscription fees are included, after which users will be responsible for appropriate maintenance or subscription fees (including support).

What Esri products will replace Google Earth Enterprise and Google Maps Engine?

Three powerful visualisation technologies were released as part of ArcGIS 10.3, which replicate and extend Google Earth Enterprise and Google Maps Engine. They include:

Later this year, the 3D capabilities of ArcGIS technology will be extended to native devices (Android, iOS, Windows Phone).

Can non-Esri clients consume ArcGIS for Server services?

Yes. ArcGIS for Server is open and supports a variety of standards, including OGC, REST, and ISO standards. Additionally, it provides open APIs and SDKs for developers. As a result, ArcGIS can be embedded or used in any client application.

How will Esri support Google partners?

Esri will provide its ArcGIS technology at no cost to the full Google partner ecosystem that currently uses Google Earth Enterprise or Google Maps Engine. This will include software, training, and technical assistance in migrating apps to the Esri environment. Esri is also inviting Google partners to join the Esri Partner Program.

Can ArcGIS manage and serve very large datasets?

Yes. ArcGIS is highly scalable and enterprise ready. In addition to vector data, it can serve and consume large collections of imagery and raster data and perform on-the-fly processing and dynamic mosaicking to simplify imagery management. ArcGIS also supports LiDAR and scientific data formats, such as NetCDF.

Can ArcGIS scale to support large numbers of clients?

Yes. ArcGIS scales to support extreme volumes of simultaneous users in cloud, on-premises, or hybrid environments.

How does ArcGIS support 3D visualisation?

With ArcGIS 10.3, Esri has added 3D globe and elevation services. This means that 2D and 3D data can be easily visualised in any of Esri's high-performance client apps including:

  • ArcGIS Pro – this recently released app supports simultaneous 2D and 3D visualisation.
  • Map and 3D Scene Viewer – this browser-based app visualises 2D and 3D data.
  • Custom apps created using Esri's web APIs and mobile SDKs.
Can ArcGIS support real-time data?

Yes. ArcGIS supports real-time data feeds from sensor networks, RSS feeds, and a variety of other formats. It can also perform dynamic analytics, such as geofencing, and other location-based messaging.

Will ArcGIS Pro perform at the same speed as Google Earth?


Will I have to migrate my data?

Yes. This can be easily accomplished through a batch data conversion process.
