The 2025 ArcGIS StoryMaps Competition finalists have been announced, with two Malaysian entries recognised among more than 450 submissions from 55 countries and 14 languages. These locally grounded StoryMaps demonstrate how geospatial storytelling can bring real social, environmental, and community issues to life through data-driven narratives.

This StoryMap explores the rising cost of living and how financial pressures are reshaping everyday life, as global ageing and youth population trends place increasing pressure on the “sandwich generation” caught between caring for parents and supporting children.

Focusing on coral reef decline and its ripple effects on coastal communities in Kota Kinabalu, this StoryMap uses environmental data and geographic context to show how changes in marine ecosystems affect livelihoods. Through GIS mapping, peer-reviewed research, and local field surveys, it traces key threats to the reefs and highlights community-led pathways for restoration.
