Kickstart your geospatial career in 2024

The Esri Young Scholar Award program recognises the exemplary work in geospatial science of graduate and undergraduate students and celebrates their excellence, innovation, and creativity in the application of GIS technology to solve real-world challenges. 

Each year, one lucky Malaysian student will get an opportunity to gain valuable industry experience, exposure to the geospatial sector, and a global platform to showcase their work.

How to enter

To be in the running to become the 2024 Esri Young Scholar, Malaysian undergraduate and postgraduate geospatial discipline students are invited to submit a project, software development, application or research paper that strategically leverages GIS to drive positive outcomes. Follow the steps below for a successful submission, keeping in mind the images used are for illustrative purposes: 

An entry project, software development, application or research paper.

A written response (no more than 500 words) outlining the purpose of your project, its value and why you should be the next Malaysian Esri Young Scholar.

A one-page poster that provides an overview of your project or report. The poster must be 300dpi and a .pdf or .png file.

Proof that you are currently enrolled as a student at a Malaysian university – in the form of a letter from your lecturer/tutor and a photocopy of your university ID.

The first-place winner will receive a prize package including: 

  • An all-expenses paid trip to the 2024 Esri User Conference in San Diego.
  • An award and certificate recognising their achievement.
  • A 12-month ArcGIS Personal Use license.
  • Having their work featured on the global stage at the 2024 Esri User Conference Map Gallery.
  • An opportunity to network with international Young Scholar Award recipients.
  • A chance to be a trainee in Esri Malaysia.

Judging panel

Entries will be judged by a panel of GIS experts based on the following criteria:

  • Creativity and/or innovation
  • Real-world relevancy
  • Application of Esri technology
  • Technical merit

The judging panel will select the 2024 Malaysian Esri Young Scholar with a public announcement made via Esri Malaysia's website and social media channels.
