Whether it is to report the sighting of stray cats or abused animals – citizens can now play a bigger role in animal monitoring, with a high-tech twist.
The Cat Welfare Society (CWS) has added the Singapore Government’s OneMap application to its website – allowing Singaporeans to easily post comments, pictures or videos of their stray cat sightings.
OneMap is a crowd-sourcing tool that uses GIS technology to mash up the government’s mapping data with stray cat sightings posted by citizens.
Essentially, by mapping the location of animal sightings, the CWS hopes to identify hotspots island-wide where stray cats are mostly found and where feeding points are needed.
