Every Esri User Conference (UC) delivers major announcements, demonstrations and customer stories. But the real value comes from looking beyond the individual updates and asking what they signal about the future of GIS.

At Esri UC 2026, one message stood out: location intelligence is becoming more accessible, more connected and more capable of helping organisations move from understanding what is happening to deciding and acting with greater confidence.

AI was central to that story, but not the whole story. Across the plenary, technical sessions and conversations with users, a broader evolution was clear: ArcGIS is becoming easier to use, more deeply embedded in enterprise workflows and better equipped to turn complex data into coordinated action.

For Australian organisations managing infrastructure, assets, services, communities and environmental risk, five significant shifts stood out.

1. AI becomes more valuable when it understands the real world

The loudest technology conversation at UC was AI, but the most important insight was not simply that more AI capabilities are coming to ArcGIS.

It was that AI needs geography. 

General-purpose AI can reason, generate and automate. GIS adds the context that makes those capabilities operational: location, time, proximity, terrain, networks, assets, events and the relationships between them. Geography turns disconnected signals into patterns people can understand and connects that understanding to a decision, workflow or response. 

This principle was visible across the three areas of AI in ArcGIS presented at UC: AI tools and models that extract information and reveal patterns at scale; AI assistants that make specialised workflows easier to complete; and agentic capabilities that can connect geospatial context with wider enterprise AI systems. 

The opportunity for organisations is therefore bigger than adding an AI feature to an existing process. It is to identify where location could make an AI-generated answer more relevant, explainable and actionable.

For organisations, this means the value of AI will depend less on how powerful the model is in isolation and more on whether it can be grounded in trusted operational data, spatial context and real-world workflows.

2. GIS is evolving from a system of record to a system of action

For decades, GIS has helped organisations create an authoritative view of assets, environments, networks and communities. At UC, the next step in that evolution became clearer. 

A system of record tells you what exists and where. A system of action can also help detect change, interpret what it means, guide a response and connect that response across people and systems.

This shift is being enabled by a combination of real-time data, imagery, analytics, automation, AI and enterprise integration. In practice, that could mean identifying development from imagery and directing experts to the records that require review; detecting risk across an asset network and prioritising inspection; or allowing a business user to ask a natural-language question of trusted map data and receive a geographically grounded answer. 

For leaders, the implication is that GIS should not be treated only as a specialist mapping environment. It is increasingly part of the operational architecture that connects data to decisions. The organisations that gain the most value will be those that integrate spatial intelligence into the workflows where decisions are actually made.

3. Accessibility is not about removing expertise, it is about extending its reach

Another consistent theme was the effort to make sophisticated geospatial capabilities easier to access.

AI assistants can help users generate expressions, code and metadata using natural language. Semantic search can make content easier to find without an exact keyword. Guided interfaces can help people explore map data or select an appropriate analysis approach. Many of the smaller product improvements demonstrated at UC were also designed to remove friction from everyday work.

This does not make geospatial expertise less important. It changes where that expertise creates value.

When routine steps are easier to complete, GIS professionals can spend more time framing the right question, validating data and outputs, designing robust workflows and applying judgement to complex decisions. At the same time, more people across an organisation can benefit from spatial insight without needing to become GIS specialists.

The strongest model is not human-out-of-the-loop, but human-led. Technology expands capacity, while people remain accountable for context, quality and consequence.

4. The most meaningful innovation is often the improvement users feel every day

UC naturally showcases major advances, but some of the most useful developments were more practical: clearer visibility of dependencies between ArcGIS items, tools to review and optimise web maps, improved content discovery, guided data entry and stronger oversight of shared environments.

These changes matter because enterprise GIS is rarely held back by one dramatic limitation. More often, value is lost through small points of friction: content that is difficult to find, dependencies that are hard to trace, repetitive tasks, inconsistent metadata, or uncertainty about how a change will affect other applications and users.

Reducing that friction can improve productivity, but the wider benefit is confidence. Teams can manage content more effectively, strengthen data quality and governance, and make changes with a clearer view of downstream impacts.

5. Customer outcomes, not technology, remain the clearest measure of progress

The most compelling moments at UC were the examples of GIS being applied to real operational and societal challenges. 

Across transport, government, infrastructure, natural resources and other sectors, the pattern was consistent: organisations are using spatial intelligence to connect information that was previously fragmented, give more people a shared view of what is happening and support faster, better-coordinated decisions.

The regional customer stories reinforced that this is not a distant vision. From transport authorities using AI-enabled GIS to make complex network information easier to access, to forestry organisations combining remote sensing, field data and AI to monitor vast operating areas, GIS is already becoming part of how organisations run – not simply how they map.

Digital twins illustrated the same lesson. A digital twin creates value when it connects the physical and virtual worlds around a clear purpose. The goal is not to build the most detailed model possible; it is to create a living view that helps people understand conditions, test scenarios and act across the lifecycle of an asset, network or place.

The question to ask is not, "How much technology can we deploy?" It is, "What problem are we trying to solve, and what evidence will show that the outcome has improved?"

Key takeaway: Technology creates value only when it is connected to a clear problem and a measurable operational or societal outcome.

What Australian organisations should do next

UC 2026 showed that the geospatial landscape is moving quickly, but organisations do not need to pursue every new capability at once.

Start with one high-value workflow and ask:

  • Where is data fragmented or difficult to interpret?
  • Which decision would improve with stronger location context?
  • What manual work could be simplified without removing necessary oversight?
  • What data, governance and integration foundations must be in place?
  • How will success be measured in operational, not only technical, terms?

From there, organisations can test deliberately, involve the people who understand the workflow, and scale what proves useful. Trusted adoption requires security, privacy, transparency and clear accountability from the beginning, not as controls added after deployment. 

The central lesson from UC was not that technology will solve every challenge. It was that GIS is becoming a more intelligent and connected foundation for people to solve real problems, with greater context, speed and confidence.
